The rail journey across the Scottish Highlands has been recognized as one of the world’s best travel destinations.
National Geographic has selected the Royal Scotsman train across the Highlands as the 14th and sole UK destination in its “Best of the World – Top 20 Travel Experiences” list for 2024.
Other activities include a horseback safari in Kenya, bear viewing in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, shark diving in Western Australia, trekking a volcano in Panama, and exploring tea paths in Sri Lanka.
Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland, said: “The spectacular scenery and landscapes of the Highlands are one of the top reasons people visit this region, so it’s no surprise that National Geographic has highlighted a tour that takes in this natural grandeur.
“It’s terrific that Scotland has been named again to the Best of the World list, highlighting our world-class experiences. We appreciate the opportunity to promote sustainable transportation and urge guests to discover our land throughout the seasons.
“VisitScotland is committed to establishing Scotland as a worldwide known responsible tourism destination. We are collaborating with the industry, communities, and visitors to preserve and maintain Scotland’s natural, social, and cultural assets, which are critical to its brand and future economy.
Best of the World 2024 was developed, researched, reported, and published in conjunction with National Geographic’s global editorial staff.
National Geographic stated, “Exploring Scotland’s untamed, gorgeous Highlands doesn’t have to imply roughing it. The Royal Scotsman train glides over gloomy lochs and towering hills in style. New suites will debut in May 2024, with decor that reflect the captivating surroundings through dark woods, wool tweeds, and highly patterned handmade tartans crafted by Scottish firm Araminta Campbell. After a day of hiking to waterfalls or playing golf (a national pastime), visitors can relax with a treatment at the onboard spa.
“The two to seven-night rail rides departing Edinburgh’s Waverley Station travel through the heart of the Highlands, from Perthshire to Inverness to the craggy west coast. During pauses, travelers can see castles, stargaze in Cairngorms National Park, sip whiskey at renowned distilleries, and even swim in a lake.
The Scottish Highlands had already been designated one of National Geographic’s Best of the World destinations for 2023 in the ‘nature’ category. The region was one of only two UK destinations to make the yearly list, which included areas like Alladale Wilderness Reserve and the Affric Highlands initiative.
