The Access College Foundation recently granted five $25,000 scholarships to students from various Hampton Roads high schools, including one to a graduating senior from Suffolk.
Access College organization surprised graduating seniors from Manor High School, Landstown High School, Salem High School, Indian River High School, and Lakeland High School with a $25,000 payment, according to a news release from the organization.
Alexis Perkins, a Lakeland High School alumnus, is the only recipient from Suffolk of the $25,000 Anne B. Shumadine Scholarship.
An internal “Beating the Odds” selection committee chose scholarship recipients based on a number of traits and achievements. All of these graduating seniors have pledged to attend college or university beginning in the fall of 2023.
Many more students will be given scholarships at the next Access Scholarship Awards Ceremony, which will take place later this month.
Access has assisted over 77,000 students from low-income households in enrolling in a certification or degree program since 1988, while leveraging $780 million in financial aid and scholarships. Furthermore, Access has provided more than $14 million in Access “Last-Dollar” Scholarships to students, assisting them in pursuing their educational goals.
