On Monday, Vietnam’s rubber-stamp parliament unanimously approved army general Luong Cuong as the country’s new president, becoming the fourth in less than two years.
In Vietnam, the president’s job is mostly ceremonial, including meetings with foreign counterparts.
According to official television, all 440 National Assembly deputies voted to approve the nominee at Monday’s session.
Cuong succeeds To Lam as president, who has uncommonly held the job while also serving as general secretary amid recent upheavals due to a major anti-corruption drive.
Lam, the Communist Party’s general secretary, is the most influential man in Vietnam’s leadership system.
