The son of Somalia’s president, Mohammed Hassan Cheikh Mohamud, is wanted by Turkish authorities after reportedly striking and killing a motorbike courier rider on November 30. An international arrest warrant has since been issued for him, according to the BBC.
Following the event, authorities stated that the vehicle Mohamud was driving belonged to the Somali consulate in Turkey. Authorities suspect Mohamud has since fled Turkey, despite being forbidden from abroad.
Ekrem mamolu, the mayor of Istanbul, published CCTV footage of the crash on X (formerly known as Twitter). A automobile is seen in the footage ramming a motorcyclist from behind on a multi-lane road.
Yunus Emre Göçer, 38, was recognized as the deceased victim. He died as a result of his injuries after being hospitalized for six days.
According to the deceased victim’s lawyer, authorities initially stated that Göçer was the one who caused the fatal crash, paving the path for Mohamud’s release. Mohamud was issued an international arrest order after Turkish authorities failed to find him at home during a visit. He had supposedly been gone for about a week.
According to the BBC, diplomatic relations between Turkey and Somalia have improved during the last ten years. Turkey has provided infrastructural investment, military training, and humanitarian help to the Horn of Africa nation.
