Atlanta Woman Arrested For Attempted Arson On MLK Birth Home

Authorities in Atlanta have arrested and charged a 26-year-old woman with attempting to burn down the birthplace of renowned Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Fulton County Magistrate Judge Holly Hughes ordered Laneisha Shantrice Henderson to remain in detention on Saturday due to her unstable residence and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“She gave an address in a different state. So I find that there is a likelihood that she may not return to court,” said Hughes. “I’m extremely concerned about the randomness of this event. There does not seem to be any reason or tie to that particular location.”

Henderson allegedly attempted to set fire to a historic monument on Auburn Avenue NE in the Sweet Auburn Historic District. Henderson is seen on film pouring a liquid – which officials believe is gasoline – on the property’s plants, porch, and front door.

The guy, who allegedly tried to set fire to the house after pouring the gasoline, was eventually stopped by two former New York City Police officers and two Utah visitors until police arrived.

According to Atlanta Fire Department Battalion Chief Jerry DeBerry, the house could have caught fire in a matter of seconds after being doused with gasoline.

Henderson has subsequently been charged with second-degree arson and tampering with government property. Federal charges may also be filed against her.
