Russia Declares Estonian PM Kaja Kallas ‘Wanted’

On Tuesday, Russia declared Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas “wanted” on criminal charges, taking an unprecedented action against its Baltic neighbours.

It was unclear why Kallas, who has led Estonia since 2021, was named as “wanted”.

Relations between Moscow and EU member Estonia, which has a sizable Russian population, have remained difficult since the Cold War’s end.

Russia has repeatedly chastised Estonia for dismantling Soviet-era war memorials, which Tallinn regards as unpleasant reminders of its control by the USSR.

The Russian interior ministry’s wanted people database listed Kallas as “wanted under the Criminal Code” without specifying the accusations, along with a photo of the leader.

Estonia did not respond immediately.

Earlier in February, Moscow summoned diplomats from its three Baltic neighbors, accusing them of attempting to “sabotage” the Russian presidential election next month.
