Mobile Internet Cut In Dakar Amid Senegal Political Crisis

Access to mobile internet was stopped in Dakar on Monday, according to AFP journalists, as Senegal grapples with a political crisis following President Macky Sall’s announcement to postpone this month’s election.

Many users in the city reported that they had been unable to utilize mobile data on their phones since the morning.

Senegal’s parliament is about to begin considering a proposal to postpone the presidential election, which was originally scheduled for February 25, for up to six months.

Opposition leaders have called for a demonstration outside parliament.

It comes a day after violent street protests erupted in Dakar, with security forces firing tear gas at demonstrators and at least one key opposition figure arrested.

The Sonatel workers’ union, Senegal’s main telephone operator, predicted a possible blackout on Sunday, saying it “disapproves of any idea by the Senegalese government to cut off or restrict the internet”.

Last June, the authorities stopped mobile data due to high tensions in the country.
