Michael Jordan, largely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, continues to increase his wealth. Following a remarkable $1.3 billion gain in 2023, his fortune has increased by another $200 million this year, cementing his status among the world’s wealthiest.
Jordan’s net worth has risen from $3 billion in January 2024 to $3.2 billion at the time of writing, according to Forbes, a top business journal in the US.
The increase in his net worth is due to a reevaluation of his broad asset portfolio. This includes a minority position in the Charlotte Hornets, ownership of the sports betting company DraftKings, and a large share in 23XI Racing, the NASCAR team he co-founded with Joe Gibbs and Denny Hamlin (worth $150 million).
Jordan now ranks 1,002nd on Forbes’ list of billionaires as a result of this new increase. His $3.2-billion fortune places him as the world’s sixth-richest Black person, topping notable personalities such as Oprah Winfrey ($2.8 billion), Jay-Z ($2.5 billion), and Patrice Motsepe ($2.5 billion).
Only five Black individuals globally possess a higher net worth than Jordan. These include Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote ($13.5 billion), as well as billionaires from the United States, Robert F. Smith and David Steward, and Nigerian billionaires Abdul Samad Rabiu and Mike Adenuga.
Jordan’s appearance on the 2023 Forbes 400 list represented a notable milestone, as he became the first professional athlete to join America’s elite billionaires. His ongoing financial success solidifies his legacy as a basketball star and astute businessman.
