Manchester United exited Europe after a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, capping off a disastrous Champions League campaign for the Red Devils.
The only goal for the German champions, who had long since guaranteed their spot in the last 16, came from Kingsley Coman, leaving United without even the consolation of slipping into the Europa League.
The three-time European winners needed to beat Bayern on Tuesday and hope Copenhagen’s game against visiting Galatasaray ended in a tie.
In the 70th minute, Kingsley Coman scored from close range for Bayern, who finished unbeaten in Group A with 16 points and had the joyful away fans screaming “Football’s Coming Home” in the dying seconds.
“We didn’t make it, we have to accept and learn from it,” Dutchman Ten Hag told TNT Sports.
“We made mistakes. Today the performance was very good. We didn’t deserve to lose but we lost the game.”
“In the end, it’s not good enough.”
United have only four points, and their fourth-place result means they will not even qualify for the Europa League playoffs, prompting boos as the final whistle blew.
Copenhagen triumphed 1-0 in Denmark to end with eight points and advance to the Champions League knockout phase, while Galatasaray finished third with five points and qualified for the Europa League playoffs.
United won just one of their six group games, leaving their chances of progressing hanging by a thread after twice blowing a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Nov. 29.
Bayern had already earned first place in the group after defeating United 4-3 in their previous match in Munich.
