How Dwayne Johnson’s ZOA Energy Drink Brand Earned Over $100m in Sales in Its First Year

Dwayne Johnson’s (The Rock) foray into the liquor and beverage market has been a huge success. It will be remembered that at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the actor-turned-entrepreneur established his own liquor brand called Teremana Tequila, which went on to achieve record sales the following year.

Johnson claimed to his over 205 million Instagram followers that he was on schedule to sell 300,000 cases and ship over 400,000 cases of Teremana in its first year of operation. Three years after its inception, the ultra-premium brand surpassed one million cases in annual sales, equating to 9 million litres of liquid.

Forbes reportedly claimed in June that the brand was the fastest-growing tequila category in the United States and could overtake Vodka as the most-consumed American liquor category by the end of 2025.

Johnson took the magic wand he utilized in his tequila business and applied it to his other company, ZOA Energy Drink. He co-founded the energy drink company with his long-time business friends Dany Garcia and Dave Rienzi, as well as Juggernaut Capital managing partner John Shulman.

According to the firm, ZOA is free of preservatives, artificial substances, and additives, and each 16-ounce can contain 100% vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, and the vital vitamin D, as well as a clean blend of green tea and green unroasted coffee, electrolytes, and amino acids.

Forbes predicted that when ZOA launched two years ago, it would be the first clean and nutritious product in the energy drink aisle produced with immunity-boosting superfood ingredients like turmeric, camu camu, and acerola.

According to Benzinga, the energy drink is doing incredibly well and making a lot of money. ZOA Energy achieved over $100 million in sales in 2022 and reported 138% year-over-year increase.

The expansion follows a deal with Molson Coors in 2021, with the beverage business serving as the brand’s exclusive distribution partner. ZOA is now available in over 42,000 retail locations and 160,000 distribution sites across the United States and Canada. Molson Coors’ collaboration with ZOA Energy has since grown.

“The entire ZOA family couldn’t be more thrilled with the expanded Molson Coors relationship and the many opportunities for growth this collaboration creates,” Johnson noted, according to The Drinks Business. “We’re grateful to play a pivotal role in Molson Coors’ investment into their ‘Beyond Beer’ growth and most importantly, playing a role in the wellness journeys of our loyal and growing consumers as we continue crafting drinks that help them show up as their best selves.”
