Jimmie Scott has been with S&S Cafeteria since it first opened in 1936. According to 13WMAZ, after 65 years of employment at a restaurant in Macon, Georgia, the employee has retired.
The 85-year-old began as a dishwasher and worked his way up to become the dining room supervisor. He started at the age of 15 and has served in a variety of areas, including Riverside and Bloomfield.
“They took care of me and looked out for me for 65 years, and for that, I am grateful,” he told radio station 13WMAZ.
Last Wednesday, friends, family, and coworkers gathered to celebrate his six decades of loyal service. Mayor Lester Miller attended the ceremony, and later announced February 21, 2024, as Jimmie Scott Day, commemorating the retirement with photos, remarks, and plenty of cake.
Scott had seven children, but S&S Cafeteria felt like an extended family to him. He collaborated with General Manager Kevin Heide, among others. Scott worked with him for 15 years.
“I spend much of my time with my family. But I actually enjoy coming to work. I come to work every day. “I enjoy it,” Scott told Macon Magazine.
Heide praised Scott’s ability to light up a room. “This is his home,” Heide added. “It’s his life. One of the most important aspects, in my opinion, is to expand the service. He is always concerned about providing good service. He treats everyone with his heart.”
Despite his formal retirement, Scott hinted at returning to S&S Cafeteria after a “little” break. “I might take a little trip or a little vacation, but I’m coming back,” he told me.
In an interview with Macon Magazine, he discussed the values that guided his work and stated that he loved his consumers.
“I enjoy the customers. They treat me very well, and I reciprocate. I strive extremely hard to satisfy them and the children and put a smile on their faces. “That is something I really enjoy,” he remarked.
