Dr. William Finlayson: MLK’s Schoolmate Honored With Street Name After Helping Deliver 10,000 Children

Dr. William Finlayson has been recognized with a roadway in recognition of his contributions to the Bronzeville District. As a doctor, he assisted in the delivery of an estimated 10,000 children.

He was a friend and classmate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he shared his aim of improving society. As a result, the City of Milwaukee chose to rename 5th Street Dr. William Finlayson Street.

The community’s action validates the importance of Dr. Finlayson’s impact in the district. He was the first Black doctor at St. Joseph’s and Sinai hospitals, and he was a major advocate for social justice. In addition, he founded Milwaukee’s first Black-owned bank. According to Fox 6 Now, Dr. Finlayson was committed to making a positive difference.

He had a close relationship with civil rights icon Martin Luther King, as indicated by images exhibited in his home. His influence has been extensively recognized and praised by persons such as former Milwaukee Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt and Alpha Phi Alpha’s Albert Smith.

“Dr. Finlayson is among that group that we call the greatest in their generation,” said Pratt.

Dr. Finlayson expressed his appreciation for the honor; the 98-year-old was present at the street sign presentation on Tuesday. Sheila Finlayson, his daughter, highlighted that his achievements will be remembered as people go down the street.
