Christ the Redeemer Statue Dons Pelé Jersey to Mark One Year Since Football Legend’s Death

The famous Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro dressed in Pele’s vivid yellow Brazil jersey on Friday night to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the soccer legend’s passing.

The renowned number 10 and Pele’s autograph from the national jersey were displayed on the 98-foot (30-meter) statue under lighting.

The three-time World Cup champion from Brazil rose to prominence as one of the most dominant athletes of the past century.

Pelé had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021.

According to the hospital where he had been admitted, the malignancy caused multiple organ failure, which ultimately led to his death.

A priest originated the idea for the statue, which is recognized as a global icon of Christianity, and it was dedicated about a century ago, according to the monument’s official website.

With its arms extended, the Christ statue greets millions of tourists who take selfies every year.

In 2017, it was elected as one of the new seven Wonders of the World.
