Chris Hughton Sacked After Black Stars’ Disgraceful AFCON Exit

The Ghana Football Association fired Chris Hughton as the senior national team’s head coach “with immediate effect” late Tuesday.

“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” the FA said in a statement.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton was fired following the Black Stars’ poor performance and subsequent elimination from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Cameroon scored twice with time running out on Tuesday to earn a stunning 3-2 win against Gambia, advance to the Africa Cup of Nations last-16, and knock out Ghana from the tournament.

Last November’s 2026 World Cup qualifying loss to the Comoros fueled calls for the former Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion manager to be fired.

Losing their first group encounter in the Ivory Coast against lower-ranked Cape Verde increased the strain on the 65-year-old in his maiden Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars had hoped to advance after drawing with Egypt after leading twice, but a subsequent draw with Mozambique shattered those chances.
