Brian Davis: Former NBA Player Offers $7 Billion to Purchase the Washington Commanders

 

Brian Davis, a native of Washington, DC, has entered the bidding to buy the Washington Commanders of the NFL. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, he has made an offer to purchase the team and, should it be accepted, will become the first Black owner in the NFL.

If the purchase is approved, Davis has reportedly offered to pay the Washington Commanders’ owners, Dan and Tanya Snyder, $1 billion within 24 hours and $6 billion within seven days, according to documents cited by WUSA9.

In light of the current inquiries into the team, he is also prepared to hold Snyder harmless from any legal obligations relating to the owner of the Commanders.

If the league approves the sale, the owners who will purchase the Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, are the group led by Harris and include NBA icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

According to WUSA9, Dan Snyder and billionaire Josh Harris have agreed to sell the club for $6.05 billion. Bank of America is handling the sale. The deal would be the largest amount ever paid for a professional sports club in North America, the platform continues. According to Forbes, the squad is valued $5.6 billion.

If Davis’ deal goes through, it will increase his investments in the sports industry. He is a DC United minority shareholder. Along with playing sports, he invests in energy as the head of Urban Echo Energy LLC, “a LEED-certified developer of renewable energy assets.”

He will become the NFL’s first Black owner as a result of the agreement. Due to the sizeable minority population in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, According to WUSA9, Davis’ offer letter to Dan Snyder states, “Urban Echo feels that African American ownership in the Company will be a crucial part of building the social infrastructure in the neighborhood. There is a great chance to grow the fan following already there.

Additionally, Davis made it clear that he intended to employ renewable energy for all Commanders “operations and community developments” and that he wanted to “optimize economic growth” in the areas near any potential stadium for the team.

The funds used to buy the NFL team came from Urban Echo Energy. Davis reportedly sold his intellectual property to obtain the funds necessary to make the $7 billion bid. He allegedly received a lump sum payment from private investors as well as a $50 billion appraisal for his assets and intellectual property.

Davis attended Bladensburg High School and went to Duke University, where he played basketball. He also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1993-1994.
