Bangladesh President Dissolves Parliament

Bangladesh’s president dissolved parliament on Tuesday, a key demand of student protesters who led demonstrations that ousted longtime ruler Sheikh Hasina, a statement read.

“The president has dissolved parliament,” Shiplu Zaman, press secretary of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, said in a statement.

Student leaders, politicians, members of civil society, the president and the army chief met and eventually decided to dissolve the Parliament.

This is after pressure from the students, who gave an ultimatum at 09:00 GMT that Parliament should be dissolved or they would start protesting.

At the same time, there has been an order for the release of Khaleda Zia, the former prime minister and main opposition leader, who has been under house arrest.

She was convicted in 2018 and given a 17-year imprisonment sentence for corruption charges.
