At Least 30 Dead, 35 Missing After Torrential Rains in China

According to state media, at least 30 people have died and 35 are missing in central China as a result of days of severe rain earlier this week.

Typhoon Gaemi, which traveled from the Philippines and Taiwan to make landfall in eastern China a week ago, prompted the downpours, with the hilly, landlocked Hunan province being particularly heavily impacted.

More than 11,000 people were evacuated from Zixing after some parts received record rainfall of 645 millimeters (25 inches) in only 24 hours, state news agency Xinhua said on Tuesday.

The extreme weather briefly shut off many highways connecting townships in the Zixing area, affecting electricity and communications infrastructure.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, “the roads, electricity, and communications in eight towns in Zixing city that were most severely affected by Typhoon Gaemi have basically opened” on Thursday.

“Initial findings show that there have been 30 deaths and 35 are missing,” the report said, adding that search and rescue efforts were still ongoing.

On Tuesday Xinhua said four people had been killed and three people were missing in Zixing.

Three people were killed in Hunan’s Yongxing county, Xinhua said Tuesday, while a landslide on Sunday killed 15 people elsewhere in the province.
