According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2023, while no country has completely narrowed its gender gap, Scandinavian countries are leading the way.
According to the World Economic Forum, or WEF, the research, which was released in June, examined gender parity in 146 countries. According to the report, the global gender gap has decreased by 68.4%, up 0.3% from last year’s figure of 68.1%.
The Global Gender Gap Report examines gender gaps across nations in four areas: economic inclusion and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. The WEF claims that the data is derived from the most recent statistics from international organizations as well as surveys.
Each of the four subindices is calculated as a weighted average of their underlying data indicators. The total Global Gender Gap Index score is calculated by taking the average of each subindex value.
“Global gender gaps in health and education have narrowed over the past year, yet progress on political empowerment is effectively at a standstill, and women’s economic participation has regressed rather than recovered,” Saadia Zahidi, managing director at WEF, said in the report.
According to the report, closing the gender gap in political empowerment will take 162 years and closing the gender gap in economic participation and opportunity will take 169 years at the current rate of advancement.
