Why Elderly Mom in China is Leaving $2.8 Million Inheritance to Pets

An elderly woman has opted to leave her $2.8 million inheritance to her cats, claiming they have been her only source of consolation in old age.

According to The South China Morning Post, Ms Liu, a mother from Shanghai, left her three children out of her will due to their lack of care and visitation.

Ms Liu had planned to leave her riches to her children, but she changed her mind owing to a lack of communication.

In her amended will, she specifies that all of her money should be used to care for her dogs and potential kids. She has selected a local vet clinic to administer her inheritance and animals.

Chen Kai, an officer at the Will Registration Centre headquarters in Beijing, told The South China Morning Post that she wanted to give all of her money straight to her dogs, but that is not allowed in China.

“However, there are alternatives to solve this issue,” Kai went on to say.

“Liu’s current will is one way and we would have advised her to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the vet clinic to ensure the pets are properly cared for.”

An official warned Ms Liu about the dangers of surrendering all of her money to the vet facility.

“We told Auntie Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her, she could always alter her will again,” they went on to say.

The news ignited a heated internet debate in China.
