Who Was Senzo Meyiwa, South African Professional Footballer?

Senzo Meyiwa was the captain of the Orlando Pirates Football Club and a South African professional footballer. He is also a member of South Africa’s National Team.

Senzo is regarded as one of South Africa’s most talented and respected footballers. However, on October 26, 2014, he was shot and killed during a home invasion.

Early Life Meyiwa

Senzo Meyiwa was born on September 24, 1987 in Durban, South Africa. He was raised by both of his parents, who guided him and provided for his basic needs. Senzo received his primary education in a private high school before enrolling in a private college.

He has always enjoyed football and was a member of his school team. Senzo had always had his parents’ support, and he appreciated it until his death.

Career

Senzo Meyiwa began his football career as a member of the London Cosmos youth team before joining the Orlando Pirates. Between 2002 and 2005, he was a member of Orlando’s reserve team.

In 2008, he had the opportunity to impress the main team when he made his debut for Privates against AmaZulu, winning 2-1.

He played full-time for the Orlando Pirates in 2012 due to a new Pirate coach, and he performed admirably. Senzo is regarded as one of the best penalty stoppers, having aided his team numerous times.

Senzo also appeared in a number of international matches. On June 2, 2013, he made his debut for South Africa, winning 2-0 away against Lesotho. Senzo was also a member of South Africa’s square led by Gordon Igesund for the 2013 African Cup of Nations, but he did not compete.

He qualified for South Africa’s 2015 AFCON team and played four times, with his final match being a 0-0 draw against Congo at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

When he played in AFCON, he was given the captain’s armband in all four of his previous games.

He then joined Brian Baloyi and Moeneeb Josephs as the only goalkeepers to captain Bafana on four occasions without conceding a goal.

Prior to his death, he was the captain of Orlando and played for the South African national team in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Senzo’s most recent football match was a win over Telkom Knockout FC on October 25th. He was a respected footballer with seven international caps and six clean sheets.

Personal Life

Senzo, 30, is married to Mandisa Meyiwa, a career woman. For years, the couple had a lovely union until their marriage soured due to Senzo’s extramarital affairs. However, Senzo was unwilling to conceal his extramarital affairs with Pop singer Kelly Khumalo, which caused his wife to leave the marriage.

Controversies

In November 2014, it was revealed that Senzo had lied about his true age throughout his professional football career. According to his school records and tombstone, he was born on January 24, 1984, making him 30 years old rather than 27, as he claimed at the time of his death.

Death

Senzo was shot and killed during a robbery at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus on October 26, 2014. He was rushed to a Johannesburg hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police believed three people were involved in the shooting and released photos of two of the suspects.

Zamokuhle Mbatha was arrested as one of the suspects on October 31st and charged in court. However, he was released on November 11, 2014, due to a lack of evidence sufficient to convict him.

The Soweto Derby, which was scheduled for November 1st, was postponed as a show of respect. Former President Jacob Zuma expressed his condolences and called for Senzo’s murderers to be brought to justice.

On November 1st, they held a state funeral for Senzo at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Fans and friends, colleagues, football officials, and politicians were among those who attended his funeral.

Senzo’s murder trial is still ongoing at the North Gauteng High Court as of September 2022.
