Jonathan T. Capehart is a television anchor and journalist. On July 2, 1967, he was born in Newark, New Jersey. In 1985, Capehart graduated from Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark. He then went on to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he earned a B.A. in political science in 1989.

His uncle McKinley Branch, who worked at The Today Show, took Capehart to work with him one day while he was in college. Capehart made a connection that led to a summer internship with The Today Show for two years.

Capehart worked as an assistant to the president of the WNYC Foundation, which supports WYNC 93.9 FM and AM 820, New York’s flagship public radio stations, after graduation. American Public Media, NPR, the BBC World Service, and a variety of other award-winning programs are broadcast on the stations. Capehart returned to the Today as a researcher in 1992. He served on the editorial board of the New York Daily News from 1993 to 2000. He was part of the editorial team that ran a series that helped save Harlem’s Apollo Theater, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1999.

Capehart left the Daily News in 2000 to write speeches and advise Michael Bloomberg during his 2001 mayoral campaign in New York City. He rejoined the Daily News in 2002 and served as its deputy director until 2004. He was Senior Vice President and Senior Counselor of Public Affairs at Hill & Knowlton, a global public relations firm, from 2004 to 2007. In 2007, Capehart was appointed to The Washington Post’s editorial board.

For the first time, he guest-anchored on a cable network news program in 2010. In 2013, he launched his podcast Cape Up. Capehart began hosting Midday, a WNYC radio show, in 2018. Capehart began contributing to the PBS NewsHour as an occasional contributor in 2018, and she became a regular contributor in January 2021. In December 2020, he was named the host of The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart, a new weekly program on MSNBC.
