Mayme Edna and Morgan Porterfield Freeman gave birth to Freeman on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the fifth and youngest of five children. However, after his grandmother died, he later joined his mother in Chicago, around the same time his parents divorced.
