At only two years old, Hazel Monét Gaines has already shattered records by becoming the youngest person to get a Grammy nomination. The daughter of 34-year-old R&B musician Victoria Monét has succeeded Leah Peasall of The Peasall Sisters, who was the youngest Grammy candidate and winner at age 8 in 2002 for her performance on “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
Hazel and her mother were nominated for a Grammy for best traditional R&B performance for the song “Hollywood,” featuring Earth, Wind, and Fire.
In 2023, the delighted mother discussed Hazel’s early passion in music with People magazine. “I observe her learning rhythm, attempting to identify different cadences and what she is drawn to in songs. “I just get re-inspired by that innocence and curiosity about music,” Monét explained.
The “Monopoly” singer also spoke with “E! News” on the red carpet. “There was a lot of dread about becoming pregnant. Experiencing COVID as a pregnant woman might lead to concerns about balancing work and motherhood. To share one of my most important moments with my kid is the perfect wink from God. ‘You are doing the right thing. “Keep going.”
Monét recently quipped that her daughter’s favorite word right now is “no.” She went on to say, “She stands for what she wants. So I think she’ll be an excellent businesswoman. She’s going to be an incredible artist. She’ll have her own vision, she’ll be incredibly creative, and she will undoubtedly have a voice.
Hazel celebrated her milestone by hosting a toddler formal gala, which she published on social media with the message, “My babygirl is the Youngest Grammy Nominee ever?!.” Of course, we had to host a toddler formal Gala to commemorate the historic achievement, lol y’all it was the cutest thing ever.”
AP News reports that the mother won Best New Artist at the 66th Grammy Awards on Sunday. Monét won the category over Gracie Abrams, Fred Again, Noah Kahan, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Coco Jones, and The War and Treaty.
“Thank you, God…” Monét accepted the honor, stating that it was a 15-year pursuit. “I went to Los Angeles in 2009, and I prefer to think of myself as a plant that was planted. And you can think of the music industry as soil, which might be unclean or nutrient-rich. My roots have been spreading beneath the ground unseen for a long time. And I feel like now I’m finally blossoming above ground.”
Monét’s album “Jaguar II” received multiple awards, including best R&B album and best engineered non-classical album.
Monét attended the Grammys with her two-year-old daughter, Hazel’s father, and her boyfriend, John Gaines.
“I don’t think she quite understands,” Monét added, wanting to communicate the significance of the moment with her daughter.
