US Sanctions 10 Hamas Members, Financial Facilitators

The US Treasury sanctioned ten Hamas members, operatives, and financial intermediaries on Wednesday, including a top commander, as the battle rages in the aftermath of the extremist group’s surprise strike on Israel.

The new sanctions target individuals in Gaza and elsewhere, including Sudan, Turkey, Algeria, and Qatar, according to a statement from the US agency.

“The United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas’s financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in a statement.

Hamas launched a surprise assault inside Israel on October 7, killing 1,400 people.

According to Hamas health officials, over 3,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel declared war and began retaliatory bombings.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Israel on Wednesday.

“The U.S. Treasury has a long history of effectively disrupting terror finance and we will not hesitate to use our tools against Hamas,” he said.

She stated that the US will “continue to take all necessary steps” to deny Hamas the chance to generate financing for “atrocities.”

The US has previously designated Hamas as a terrorist organization.

The Treasury has targeted approximately 1,000 persons and corporations linked to terrorism and terrorist financing by the Iranian regime and organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
