UK to Pay Asylum Seekers £3,000 to Move to Rwanda

Migrants whose asylum requests are denied by the United Kingdom will get £3,000 ($3,800) to relocate to Rwanda.

The UK has already implemented a mechanism that compensates unsuccessful asylum applicants to return to their native nations.

However, the new approach focuses on people who are unable to return to their home nations, according to local press reports.

The payment in return for migrating to Rwanda is only one of several schemes under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s ambitious effort to combat irregular migration.

It does not replace the proposal to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda, which was halted by judges due to safety concerns in the east African country.

To allay the court’s worries, the government submitted a law that attempts to declare Rwanda as safe.

Last week, the proposed legislation suffered a severe blow when the House of Lords advanced five amendments that, if adopted, would make it more difficult for the House of Commons to declare Rwanda “safe” and would oblige the government to follow domestic and international law.

The measure requires judges to treat Rwanda as a safe country and empowers ministers to disregard provisions of the Human Rights Act.

Kigali has already received $300 million from London in exchange for admitting deportees.

Following several judicial fights and international outrage, no deportation aircraft have taken off under the agreement reached in April 2022.

Prime Minister Sunak has vowed to push through with the plan.
