U.S. Issues Travel Advisory for Jamaica

Please evaluate your trip plans to Jamaica and other countries. On January 23, the US Department of State issued a Level 3 travel recommendation. This alert advises residents to reconsider their travel plans due to potential safety risks. It is just below the highest recommendation level, level four, which lists nations with the ‘Do No Travel’ designation.

The Department of State has warned residents about the possibility of violent crimes such as house invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, and that local police may not always respond well to serious criminal situations.

The warning note informs US citizens that if they are involved in such accidents, their families may have to wait up to a year or more for formal death certificates from Jamaican authorities.

These recommendations range from level one to level four. The first one encourages “normal precautions,” while level 2 increases the amount of concern. Despite the “increased precaution” warning, this rating does not fully advise people to avoid the nation entirely.

Countries with a level four rating, on the other hand, are classified as “Do Not Travel”. Both level three and four countries are labeled as “Reconsider Travel”.
