This Kenyan Community Names Babies After U.S. Presidents and Famous Events

Naming a child is a very important event in some parts of the African continent, primarily because a name is an integral part of one’s identity. In some cultures, a child’s name is linked to a specific tribe or family and may be purposefully chosen to preserve a family lineage. That is why, in some African cultures, children are named after their grandparents.

The Luo ethnic group in Kenya places special emphasis on the time and season of a child’s birth. According to the cultural atlas, when a child is born at night, she is named Atieno for a girl and Otieno for a boy. Children are also named after significant events that occurred during the pregnancy or the circumstances of their birth. However, in recent years, there has been a trend toward giving children famous names.

This trend has emerged for a variety of reasons. For starters, parents want their children to have names that are memorable and easy to say. They ensure that their child’s name is not mispronounced or misspelled by selecting famous names. Second, parents believe that giving their children a famous name will instill pride and confidence in them. They believe that their child will be proud to bear a famous person’s name and will strive to achieve great things like their namesake.

Many parents of Lou origin named their children Obama after President Barack Obama was elected. When he visited the country in 2015, some parents reportedly named their children Airforceone, and many parents are known to have named their children Churchill or Clinton in the aftermath of these prominent figures’ ascension to high offices.

Despite his unpopularity, some Lou-speaking parents have named their children after Donald Trump. The defense is his firm belief in his principles. According to the BBC, they believe the children will imbibe one of these principles as they grow.

Finally, the adoption of famous names by the Luos is seen as a means of preserving the community’s cultural heritage. Many well-known names in Kenya have cultural significance and are associated with significant historical or cultural figures. Parents ensure that their culture is passed down to future generations by giving their children these names.

Overall, the trend of adopting famous names in the Luo community reflects the significance of names in Kenyan culture, as well as parents’ desire to give their children the best start in life by selecting a name that will bring them good fortune in the future.
