Samsung Turns To AI To Regain Smartphone Throne

Samsung on Wednesday introduced its latest Galaxy smartphone, which includes new artificial intelligence features, as the South Korean company aims to reclaim its position as the world’s largest phone seller from Apple.

The premium S24 Ultra, which was introduced at an event in San Jose, California, was reported to be capable of simultaneous translation of foreign language phone conversations and texts.

Samsung’s own AI technology powers the on-device function, which is available in 13 languages.

The S24 also includes an exceptional search feature thanks to a relationship with Google, which developed the smartphone’s Android operating system.

This, like AI, works by allowing users to simply circle a phrase or image they want to search for.

According to the business, the feature eliminates the need to switch between apps for searches, as well as the inconvenient cut and paste.

AI also improves the phone’s camera capabilities, with generative AI assisting to fill in or erase backgrounds.

These AI functions are powered by either the cloud or the phone itself, and several rely on Google’s Gemini fundamental model, which also powers the search engine giant’s Bard chatbot.

Similar AI technologies are widely reported to be part of the upcoming iPhone 16, which is expected to be unveiled later this year.

Samsung’s S24, like Apple’s previously introduced iPhone 15, features a titanium frame, which the firm claims enhances durability.

The Galaxy S24 series will be available starting January 31, with the top-of-the-line Ultra priced at $1,299.

The S24 was released just days after industry data revealed that Apple’s iPhone had overtaken Samsung as the world’s best-selling smartphone for the first time in 12 years.

According to International Data Corporation, the iPhone will overtake Samsung in 2023, selling 234.6 million units vs 226.6 million for the South Korean company.
