SaLisa Berrien is making a difference in low-income communities by assisting businesses in reducing energy waste.

Forbes reports Berrien is concerned with environmental, social, and governance issues (ESG). According to the Corporate Finance Institute, the measure is useful for organizations to understand how to manage risk and opportunity in such sectors.

Berrien founded COI Energy in 2018 with these sentiments in mind.

To identify and reduce energy waste, the digital platform employs artificial intelligence and machine learning. This is performed through predictive analytics, which allows COI customers to be informed about their energy usage.

“We developed a solution that simplifies the whole process, which is as easy to use as turning on a light switch,” Berrien tells Forbes.

What’s more, a portion of each kilowatt saved is transferred to low-income communities.

“Businesses waste about a third of the energy they consume —that’s 300 million tons of carbon being emitted annually into the environment and not being used,” Berrien shares with Forbes.

Berrien is concerned about this issue because she experienced energy poverty as a child.

Her parents had difficulty paying their monthly power payment, according to the publication.

In her senior years, she is fighting to guarantee that other families do not have to go through what she did. As a result, COI clients can donate some of their energy savings to those in need through its E2X Exchange program (excess energy exchange).

“I knew what it felt like to be in the dark,” Berrien tells Forbes.

Berrien has focused her efforts throughout time on healthcare facilities, grocery, commercial office space, and multifamily apartments, which have proven to be the most helpful areas for reducing energy waste.

“The platform gave them a clear line of sight into correcting the inefficiencies,” Berrien explains to Forbes.
