Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to become the new coach of the United States national team, several reports said on Thursday.
The Athletic and ESPN stated that unnamed sources revealed Pochettino, who left English Premier League club Chelsea in May, would succeed Gregg Berhalter as manager.
Pochettino, 52, would arrive as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.
Pochettino departed Chelsea after placing sixth in the Premier League in his lone season in command, having previously worked with Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham.
According to reports, the agreement was reached after many meetings with US Soccer Federation technical director Matt Crocker, but no contract has been signed, nor has the federation’s board of directors approved a deal with Pochettino.
According to ESPN, the Argentine cannot sign a contract with US Soccer until Chelsea’s wage dilemma is sorted.
Pochettino is likely to take over the US squad in time for a friendly against Canada on September 7 in Kansas City, according to ESPN.
