PHOTOS: Rwandan Hostel Prepares to Accommodate UK Migrants

Illegal migrants deported from Britain to Rwanda will stay at the Hope Hostel, which has sheltered student survivors of the 1994 genocide for nearly three decades.

The UK’s asylum system, which was agreed in April 2022, will transfer everyone who entered in the country unlawfully after January 1, 2022, to Rwanda, which is around 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) away.

The entire immigration idea has encountered strong resistance, particularly from Conservatives who argue that it would jeopardize judicial independence and endanger people. Last November, the Supreme Court found the asylum policy unconstitutional.

However, parliament has ultimately approved the deportation plans to Rwanda. According to the new law, any asylum seekers who arrive in Britain illegally will be deported to Rwanda.

The restored 50-room hotel is situated in Kigali’s Kagugu area. According to the Rwandan government, migrants will be provided with full-board accommodations, health treatment, and support for five years or until they become self-sufficient.

Whenever they arrive, two migrants will share a room, with common toilets and laundry facilities on each floor.

In June 2023, a government examination of a high-stakes pledge to address rising numbers of migrants arriving in tiny boats revealed that the UK’s proposal to transport asylum seekers to Rwanda would cost £169,000 ($215,035) per person.

The British government has suggested paying asylum applicants up to £3,000 ($3,836) each to travel to Rwanda. To be eligible, asylum seekers must willingly select the option.

Whenever they arrive, two migrants will share a room, with common toilets and laundry facilities on each floor.

International human rights organizations, such as Human Rights Watch (HRW), have questioned Rwanda’s claim to be a safe third country for asylum seekers.
