The Packers have started training camp without their starting quarterback.
Jordan Love will not practice or play in any preseason games until he receives a new deal, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced Monday.
Love signed an incentive-laden one-year contract extension in 2023, but he wants a long-term agreement.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a deal might be reached by the end of the week to make Love “one of, if not the highest paid QB in NFL history.”
“We completely understand where he’s coming from,” Gutekunst explained.
With the exception of practice, Love attends meetings and other training camp events. He also participated in Green Bay’s full offseason program, including the team’s mandated minicamp in June.
Gutekunst was asked whether an extension could be completed within a few days.
“Yeah, I think so, but again, you never know,” responded the gentleman. “We’re working really hard to get that done. At the same time, I am confident that we both want the same thing.
Former Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt are the other two quarterbacks on the active roster.
Last season, Love passed for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, his first as a full-time starter since Aaron Rodgers was dealt to the Jets.
He finished second in passing touchdowns (behind Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott) and eighth in passing yards. The Packers went 9-8 to make the playoffs, and Love led an upset victory over Dallas in the wild card round.
Green Bay fell in the divisional round to the San Francisco 49ers, with Love throwing an interception on the last drive.
Green Bay begins the 2024 season in Brazil against the Eagles on September 6.
