Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles against Israel in an unprecedented strike overnight, hurting at least 12 people, an Israeli army official said Sunday.
“Last night Iran fired over 300 ballistic missiles, UAVs, and cruise missiles towards Israel,” military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement, revising an earlier total of more than 200 launches.
Hagari stated that 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles were launched, but none of them entered Israeli territory. Additionally, 110 ballistic missiles were fired, although only a few of them reached Israel.
In a separate statement, the Israeli military stated that “dozens of surface-to-surface missile launches” were detected, with the vast majority intercepted before entering Israeli land.
A seven-year-old girl from a Bedouin hamlet near the southern town of Arad was among those injured, and she was in intensive care, according to the medical center that received her.
G7 Meets
The G7 leaders will conduct a video conference later Sunday to address the Iranian strikes on Israel, according to Italy, which now holds the group’s rotating leadership.
“The Italian presidency of the G7 has summoned G7 leaders for a video conference early this afternoon,” the government announced, as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the incident and expressed concern about “regional instability.”
The G7 consists of the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, and Canada.
The operation late Saturday was Iran’s first direct military strike on Israeli territory.
Over the last two weeks, Iranian authorities have regularly pledged to “punish” Israel over the deaths of seven Guards, including two Quds Force generals, in an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated, “We are attempting to prevent an even more terrible military crisis.
“The G7 will send messages to Israel — the greatest prudence is necessary to ensure the situation does not get worse — last night’s Iranian retaliation can set off a dangerous spiral,” Tajani said in an interview with Rai3.
