New Study Reveals the Richest Town in New York’s Hudson Valley

Scarsdale is New York’s richest town, according to Stacker, a content platform that analyzes nationwide data.

Stacker identified the wealthiest towns in each state based on median household income from the most recent U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey Five-Year Data, as of August 2024. However, available figures do not reveal median earnings above $250,000. Ties were broken based on the percentage of residents earning more than $200,000 annually.

“The ‘richest town’ can appear quite different from state to state, with some being significantly wealthier than others,” according to Stacker.” “For instance, the country’s millionaires and billionaires are concentrated in California, New York, Florida, and Texas, meaning that the lifestyle in Palm Beach is not akin to that of, say, Kildeer, Illinois.”

According to Stacker, the median household income in Scarsdale is $250,000, which is 232.7 percent greater than the national median. Additionally, 74.3 percent of households in the town make more than $200,000, while only 1.5 percent of families live in poverty.

“Scarsdale is 23 miles northeast of New York City, with many of its residents working in the Big Apple,” according to Stacker. “Notable citizens include James Fenimore Cooper, author of ‘The Last of the Mohicans,’ and Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins. White settlers arrived in the town in 1660 after buying the area from the Siwanoy Tribe. Scarsdale presently has a population of about 18,200 and expanded slowly due to its remote location and lack of access to Long Island Sound or the Hudson River.”
