Microsoft and Semafor Partner for AI-Assisted News Content

On Monday, Microsoft announced a collaboration with media platform Semafor and other news organizations to assist journalists in producing content using generative AI.

Through these relationships, Microsoft will assist organizations in identifying and refining procedures and policies for using artificial intelligence (AI) ethically in newsgathering and business practices, according to a blog post.

Semafor is developing “Signals”, a breaking news stream that journalists may use with OpenAI and Microsoft products to provide analysis and insights on breaking news topics.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. This comes at a time when Microsoft, along with ChatGPT maker OpenAI, confronts a lawsuit brought by the New York Times over the improper use of their published content to train artificial intelligence technology.

OpenAI and Microsoft have stated that using copyrighted works to train AI systems constitutes “fair use,” a legal philosophy that governs the unauthorized use of copyrighted content.

Microsoft also announced cooperation with news organizations such as the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, the Online News Association, and the GroundTruth Project to investigate how to integrate generative AI into their work and newsrooms.
