Meta to End Cross-Messaging Between Instagram and Facebook

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has stated that cross-platform messaging would be discontinued soon.

In 2020, the social media behemoth added cross-messaging to its apps.

Meta announced in a recent blog post that the feature will be decommissioned in mid-December.

Instagram will no longer be able to initiate conversations or calls with Facebook accounts, according to the firm.

It also stated that existing Instagram interactions with Facebook accounts will be converted to read-only mode.

“Once cross-app communication is not available, you will not be able to start new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts from Instagram,” Meta said.

“Any existing chats on Instagram that you have had with Facebook accounts will become read-only, even if these Facebook accounts are removed from the chat.”

Meta, on the other hand, did not give a rationale for abandoning the cross-messaging feature.

According to reports, it may be inspired by the European Union’s (EU) new digital markets act (DMA), which mandates that large messaging apps be interoperable with one another.

Meanwhile, Meta has been actively increasing its feature offerings in recent months in order to improve user experiences.

On October 19, the tech giant launched a feature in WhatsApp that allows users to manage numerous accounts from a single device.

In September, it also released Channels, a broadcasting tool, on the same app.

Meta introduced Threads, a text-based chat tool to compete with Twitter, in July.
