Meet Sharone Johnson, Philadelphia’s First Black Woman K-9 Sergeant

Sgt. Sharone Johnson became the first Black female K-9 sergeant in the Philadelphia Police Department, working alongside her K-9 partner Red for over a year. The trailblazer told 6ABC that her current professional path is something she has always wanted to do, even if she did not get the job easily.

She explained, “I didn’t get here on the first try, and I didn’t get here on the second try. I remained concentrated, prayed, and waited my time. “And it finally arrived.”

Johnson revealed that she uses Dutch to control her 2-year-old K-9 partner, which was brought from Holland.

As a result, the two established their own language. She stated, “I kept many of the commands in Dutch.” So if I give Red an order, only he will know what I am telling him to do. “We conduct article searches, building searches, and obedience.”

Red went to 400 hours of specific “sense school,” which included explosives training, and the two recently finished 560 hours of patrol school.

Prepared to put training into practice. Johnson stated, “Now we are on patrol. We’re on the streets. Waiting for and reacting to 911 calls.

The 18th District PDAC praised Sgt. Sharone Johnson on social media, stating, “The 18th Police District would like to congratulate her on her outstanding achievement.” Your talent and dedication are extremely inspirational!”

“The sky is the limit; whatever you want to do, you do it,” Johnson remarked, inspiring the next generation.
