Maryland Man Allegedly Shot and Killed Roommate During Dispute over Remote Control

Authorities reported that a 38-year-old man from Maryland is accused of manslaughter after shooting and killing his roommate in an argument over a remote control. Domonique Scott Hayes, 27, was fatally shot by the suspect, Richard Bennaugh, according to Fox News. The incident happened last week.

In a statement, the Prince George’s County Police stated that Hayes was killed at a home in Springdale and that officers were called to the site following a report of a shooting at the residence.

Authorities said the responding officers found Hayes suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “The preliminary investigation revealed Bennaugh shot the decedent during a dispute,” the statement said.

The shooting is said to have occurred six hours before Bennaugh ultimately contacted police, FOX 5 DC reported. Documents stated that Bennaugh informed police that Hayes “had come at him with knives.”

Bennaugh also stated that he had been asleep on the sofa before the shooting, and that Hayes’s “making a lot of noise” in the kitchen was what finally woke him up. The 38-year-old suspect said Hayes did not mind the murdered victim, but he did want to know where the remote control was located on several occasions.

When Hayes took off the blanket covering his head, Bennaugh reportedly saw that he was holding two blades. Then Bennaugh grabbed his pistol and started shooting before heading to his room.

The suspect claimed that after that, he returned to bed since he believed that none of the shots had hit Hayes. Bennaugh further asserted that he was unaware that the deceased victim had any wounds.

According to police, the 38-year-old suspect is presently in the Department of Corrections’ custody and is also facing related charges.
