On Wednesday, France’s Leon Marchand earned his third Olympic gold medal and second of the night with a stunning victory in the men’s 200m breaststroke.
Marchand had already won gold in the 200m butterfly earlier in the evening, making him the first swimmer to win both events at the same Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old reached the wall in 2 minutes and 5.85 seconds, setting a new Olympic record and the second-fastest time in history.
Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook, the defending Tokyo champion, finished second, 0.94 seconds behind, with Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands taking bronze.
Marchand had never swum the 200 breaststroke in a major international competition before, but in his current condition and with a loud home crowd behind him, there was no stopping him as he led from start to finish.
