Beatrice Chebet of Kenya breaks the women’s world 5km record during the renowned Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona with an incredible feat of athleticism.
Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia beat the women’s record by an astounding 16 seconds as the 23-year-old phenomenon crossed the finish line in an amazing 14 minutes and 13 seconds.
In addition to her amazing achievement, Chebet’s time was six seconds quicker than the current world record for women in mixed races, which was previously held by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye at the 2021 Cursa dels Nassos.
In this thrilling race, 23-year-old Taye took second place, and 26-year-old Lilian Rengeruk of Kenya finished in a creditable third.
With this win, Chebet caps off an incredible year that began in February when he won the global cross-country championship in Bathurst. Her dominance continued when she won the first-ever global 5km title in Riga in October, establishing herself as a formidable competitor. In August, Chebet won a bronze medal in the 5,000m at the World Championships in Budapest, further enhancing her stellar resume.
In a very strong field, British competitors Holly Dixon and Katie Snowden showed off their skills by placing seventh and tenth, respectively. This exciting event was further enhanced by the victory of 25-year-old Dominic Lobalu of South Sudan in the men’s race.
