Juventus was held to a goalless draw at local rivals Torino on Saturday, while Bologna hosts Monza with the potential to narrow the gap on third place in Serie A.
Another dismal performance put Juve five points ahead of fourth-placed Bologna, who will play for their first Champions League position later in the day.
Because of Italian clubs’ strong results in Europe this season, Serie A is almost certain to earn an additional spot in next year’s revised version of the continent’s top club championship.
That should ensure that Juve returns to the European elite in September. They are 12 points ahead of Atalanta, who are sixth with a game in hand and will play Verona on Monday night.
However, Massimiliano Allegri’s side has only won twice in their previous 11 games and is 19 points behind champions-elect Inter Milan, despite being title contenders in January.
Juve did not do enough to win their city derby, but Dusan Vlahovic should have scored in the sixth minute when he hit the post from close range after Federico Chiesa’s excellent effort down the right.
Vlahovic was again denied by a brilliant save from Vanja Milinkovic-Savic shortly after the hour mark, while Torino’s Duvan Zapata scored seconds after halftime only to have his goal ruled off due to Raoul Bellanova’s foul on Filip Kostic.
Torino remains ninth following Saturday’s draw, five points behind Atalanta and the Europa Conference League spot.
Earlier, Nicola Sansone’s late goal helped Lecce defeat Empoli 1-0.
Sansone fired the winning goal into an empty net with a minute remaining in southern Italy, propelling Lecce to 13th place and six points above the drop zone.
