Alberth Elis, a Honduran striker, remained in hospital on Sunday morning, according to media reports, after being placed in a coma following a major head injury sustained during Bordeaux’s Ligue 2 encounter against Guingamp.
According to reports, the Bordeaux player had successful surgery on Saturday night after being placed in an induced coma.
Bordeaux declined to corroborate this information, citing medical confidentiality.
Elis, 28, was knocked unconscious 40 seconds into the game after colliding with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis’ head on a cross.
Although Gomis recovered immediately, Elis was knocked out and treated for several minutes before being removed.
Elis, nicknamed “La Panterita” (“Little Panther”), earned his reputation in the MLS with Houston before moving to Europe in 2020 to join Portuguese club Boavista. He relocated to Bordeaux in 2021.
Elis has earned 64 caps for Honduras and scored 13 goals since his international debut in 2014.
