The excitement surrounding NFTs may have subsided. Giannis Antetokounmpo, on the other hand, has made history for one of his own.

According to Decrypt, the Milwaukee Bucks star’s single-edition NFT sold on Sorare NBA for $187,000 (113.9 ETH). The transaction is the platform’s highest-selling transaction to date.

Furthermore, the sale is the largest-known sale of any Antetokounmpo NFT, according to the outlet. In February 2021, there was a $95,000 transaction on NBA Top Shot for an on-chain sale, tying it for the 16th-largest on-chain Top Shot sale to date.

According to the outlet, Anthony Davis’ NFT sold for more than $62,000 on the platform in December 2022.

According to VentureBeat, Sorare NBA was launched in October 2022 to allow fans to collect free cards, buy NFTs, and create and manage teams with NFTs representing NBA players.

“This is our third sport, alongside football and MLB. And we’re really excited about this sport, as securing the NBA was one of the top goals of the company from the day that I joined a year ago,” Michael Meltzer, head of business development at Sorare told GamesBeat. “Just given the star power of NBA players, it fits within the global nature of our product and international community that we have in over 185 countries.”

“We’ve had a ton of respect for the NBA players who have been at the forefront of innovation and technology for a number of years,” he continued. “We look at NFTs as a underlying technology, not a market. And so we think there are lots of different unique use cases and applications. Our fantasy sports entertainment product leverages blockchain to bring ownership to the game. And we think that’s completely different than anything that’s been on the market, particularly with the NBA, whether in Web three or elsewhere.”
