Flyers Sign Travis Konecny to Richest Contract in Franchise History

The Philadelphia Flyers signed all-star forward Travis Konecny of Clachan to an eight-year contract extension worth $70 million, committing to him as a long-term member of their core as they strive to transition from rebuilding to contending.

The agreement announced Thursday keeps Konecny under contract until 2033. He will count $8.75 million against the salary cap beginning with the 2025–26 NHL season, making him Philadelphia’s highest-paid player.

On a video chat with reporters, Konecny described his decision as obvious given the organization’s future. He knew he wanted to play for the Flyers for the foreseeable future.

“That was one of the most important things for me: I just wanted to get this over with,” the Sarnia Sting alumnus stated. “This is where I wanted to be, so it was pretty easy for me to make the decision I was going to stay here as long as possible.”

General manager Daniel Briere described Konecny as a vital part of the team’s fabric and a player who has matured into a prominent leader.

“His work ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent, makes him a central figure for what we are building towards,” says Briere. “And his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city.”

Konecny, 27, achieved career highs of 33 goals and 68 points last season. He was slated to become an unrestricted free agent next summer and had been the focus of trade rumors in recent months.

“It never really bothered me,” Konecny added. “You always know that if something comes up, you never know what occurs. “But I was pretty confident just from conversations that I had with Danny and how he knew I felt… that we were going to be able to sort it out.”

Instead, the Flyers inked Konecny to a multi-year contract, joining captain Sean Couturier, forwards Joel Farabee and Owen Tippett, and defenseman Travis Sanheim.
