Fisk University’s Morgan Price Achieves HBCU Gymnastics Record with Top Score in History

Morgan Price, a gymnast at Fisk University, set a new record for herself and HBCUs with a score of 39.275, placing second in a meet at Bowling Green.

Price placed second in the meet with a 9.95 on the balance beam, as reported by ClutchPoints. According to Fisk University Gymnastics, she achieved the greatest score ever for an HBCU gymnast.

In 2023, Fisk became the first HBCU to compete in NCAA Gymnastics, debuting on January 6 at the first Super 16 event in Las Vegas. The Nashville-based university ranked fourth out of universities with established programs, including Southern Utah University, the University of Washington, and the University of North Carolina, with an overall score of 186.700.

Price, who also competed, achieved the highest vault score of the meet with an impressive 9.9, thanks to an almost flawless landing.

When she spoke with ESPN at the time, she remarked, “We have a lot of eyes on us because we are the first and making history, so it’s just so exciting to be a part of the first team ever.”

In 2022, both the university and Price made news when the young prodigy transferred from the University of Arkansas to Fisk. After learning about Fisk’s new gymnastics program, which is the first in HBCU history, the 18-year-old decided to transfer.

“It’s so exciting to be a part of something new and exciting, and all eyes will be on us this season because we’re the first HBCU gymnastics team.” Price expressed excitement about creating history alongside his teammates in an interview with The Tennessean.

Price’s decision boosted the university’s profile by establishing the nation’s first HBCU gymnastics team. The young gymnast first exhibited her skills at a gymnastics meet organized by Fisk University, with all Black women head coaches. The Lady Bulldogs competed against Brown University, Iowa State University, Rutgers University, William & Mary University, and Talladega College.

The event, held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, successfully promoted diversity in sports.
