A 25-year-old man was shot and killed at a petrol station in Birmingham about five years after his father was shot and killed at a different gas station in the same city. According to Birmingham Real-Time News, the fatal event happened on Sunday at Circle K on Tallapoosa Street.
The dead, Demetrius Antwan Davis Jr., was putting petrol into his car when a gunman approached him and started fire, according to police, who added that his death was in reprisal for an earlier incident in which the suspect’s family member was wounded.
The gunman, 51-year-old Byron Dedric Steele, was apprehended and charged with capital murder. According to police, they arrived to the area after receiving a report of a shooting, however the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
“From the evidence on the scene, it would appear that the victim did return fire,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “It was not random,’’ he added. “From the evidence our detectives have gathered, it would appear our victim was ambushed.”
Davis Jr. was a former University of Alabama at Birmingham football player (UAB). Demetrius Davis Sr., his father, was also shot and killed at a different Birmingham gas station in 2018. According to Birmingham Real-Time News, the tragic incident happened on a Sunday as well.
Despite police claims that both homicides were targeted, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting death of Davis Sr. in 2018. The killing of the younger Davis was one of eight homicides reported in Birmingham in eight days.
