Delegations from the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the European Union (EU) have met behind closed doors with Senegal’s outgoing President, Macky Sall.
The meeting, which includes former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, comes after Mr. Amadou Ba, widely regarded as Macky Sall’s successor, called to congratulate the main opposition candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on his projected victory in the presidential elections, despite the fact that the country’s constitutional Committee has yet to make an official announcement on the winner.
19 contenders are vying for the country’s top office, and the winner is projected to receive more over half of the votes cast both domestically and in the diaspora.
Election observers regarded the elections as calm and well-organized, despite the fact that cancellations and postponements caused turmoil throughout the country in the run-up to the vote.
Following the meeting, ex-Nigerian leader Jonathan congratulated Senegalese voters on a smooth election process.
Though the exact specifics of the closed-door discussion with outgoing president Macky Sall were not revealed, Jonathan promised everyone of a smooth transition that would reinforce democratic norms in West Africa.
