Cameron Reckard Earns National Merit Scholarship

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of the inaugural round of National Merit Scholarship Program winners, including one from Sheridan County.

Cameron N. Reckard, a senior at Sheridan High School, was awarded the National Merit BNSF Railway Foundation Scholarship. As part of its broader program, BNSF sponsors Merit Scholarship grants for qualified children of Burlington Northern Santa Fe employees.

Reckard will begin his studies at Harvard University in the fall. Approximately 840 outstanding high school seniors have received corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards, which have been funded by 107 corporations, foundations, and other business organizations.

Scholars were chosen from students who advanced to the finalist level of the National Merit Scholarship competition and met the scholarship sponsors’ criteria. Corporate sponsors award National Merit Scholarships to finalists who are employees’ children, inhabitants of communities served by the company, or who plan to pursue college majors or occupations that the sponsor desires to encourage.

Most of these prizes are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate college education and provide annual stipends ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Some offer a single payment ranging from $2,500 to $5,000. Recipients may use their rewards at any regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
