Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was hospitalized for a bacterial skin illness while campaigning in the Amazon, is recovering well and will be moved to the capital on Monday, according to one of his sons.
“My father is doing well, reacting well to antibiotics, and should be transferred to Brasilia today,” politician Eduardo Bolsonaro posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The tweet includes a photo of the right-wing former president, who served from 2019 to 2022, lying down in a hospital gown with sheets partially covering him. The skin on his left shin is significantly discolored.
On Sunday, Bolsonaro, 69, stated on X that he had been hospitalized in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, for erysipelas, a bacterial skin illness that causes discomfort and fever.
Bolsonaro was in Manaus, the largest city in Brazil’s Amazon area, to campaign for Alberto Neto, the Liberal Party’s mayoral candidate in the October election.
Santa Julia Hospital verified that Bolsonaro was admitted on Saturday.
Bolsonaro developed a similar infection in November 2022, shortly after losing the election to current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He was at his home in Brasilia at the time and stayed for several days.
He has been hospitalized numerous times in recent years, most recently in September, and has had multiple surgeries after being stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 presidential campaign.
