Bill Belichick Biography, Career, Teams, Records, Marriage, Children

Bill Belichick, the son of a long-time college coach, began his coaching career in 1975 when he joined the Baltimore Colts. By the 1980s, he was the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator and widely regarded as one of the game’s brightest thinkers. Following a tumultuous tenure as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in the early 1990s, Belichick joined the New England Patriots in 2000. He went on to lead the organization to six Super Bowl triumphs, the most by any head coach in NFL history, before the two parties reached an agreement to part ways in January 2024.

Early Life

Bill Belichick was born William Stephen Belichick on April 16, 1952, in Nashville, Tennessee. Bill, the only child of Steve and Jeannette Belichick, shown an early affinity for the game of football, which he very probably received from his father, a veteran assistant coach and college football scout.

Bill observed his father dissecting game tape and drawing up plays, and he frequently accompanied Steve to coaches’ meetings. By his early teens, Bill was a regular at team training and was familiar with the game’s strategies and formations.

After graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Bill attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he played lacrosse and received an undergraduate degree in economics.

Past Teams: New York Giants and Cleveland Browns

After graduating from Wesleyan in 1975, Bill obtained a job with the Baltimore Colts for $25 per week as a gopher for head coach Ted Marchibroda. From there, Belichick connected with a number of NFL teams, including the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos, in an attempt to ascend the league’s coaching ranks.

In 1979, the New York Giants hired Belichick to coach their special teams unit. He stayed with the team for 12 seasons, eventually taking over as defensive coordinator under head coach Bill Parcells, who led the organization to two Super Bowl championships.

Following the Giants’ second Super Bowl victory in 1991, Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell recruited Belichick as his new head coach. Belichick’s time in Cleveland was tumultuous. Belichick, who was demanding on his players and not particularly friendly with the media, struggled to win over the team’s supporters and unstable owner. Belichick was sacked following the 1995 season, when Modell announced that he was transferring the franchise to Baltimore.

Belichick swiftly found work with his former mentor, Bill Parcells, who was then the head coach of the New England Patriots. The couple worked in New England during the 1996 season. That year, the Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl, but were defeated by the Green Bay Packers. The next year, Belichick joined Parcells at the New York Jets, where he had been hired as head coach.

Patriots Head Coach

In early 2000, Belichick was given another opportunity to lead a franchise when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft named him head coach. While former Browns fans mocked New England’s decision to hire him, Belichick swiftly revealed why Kraft wanted him. After a challenging 2000 season, the coach relied on quarterback Tom Brady to lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl XXXVI triumph over the strongly favored St. Louis Rams.

Two years later, Belichick and the Patriots repeated their championship run by winning Super Bowl XXXVIII. The following season, the team successfully defended their title, defeating Terrell Owens and the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Belichick has been honored Coach of the Year three times: in 2003, 2007 and 2010. In 2007 and 2011, he led the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl, but they lost to Eli Manning and the New York Giants. During the 2007 season, he became the first head coach to lead a 16-0 regular-season team.

Belichick’s 2014 season saw him tie NFL coaching records by leading the Patriots to their sixth Super Bowl participation and fourth championship.

“Spygate” and “Deflategate”

Belichick’s coaching career hasn’t been without flaws. In 2007, it was revealed that the Patriots had secretly videotaped opponent coaches for several years to understand their play-calling signals. The event, dubbed “Spygate,” resulted in Belichick being fined $500,000 by the league. The Patriots were penalized an extra $250,000 and lost their first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

More charges of foul play arose when it was revealed that New England had used underinflated footballs in the 2014 AFC title game, an incident dubbed “Deflategate,” though Belichick denied any wrongdoing.

Super Bowl Records

In 2016, Belichick guided the Patriots to the AFC Championship, but they lost to the Denver Broncos. The Patriots returned to Super Bowl LI in 2017 to face the Atlanta Falcons. In a dramatic game that went into overtime in NFL history, Brady led the Patriots to a 34-28 comeback victory, making Belichick the first head coach to win five Super Bowl titles and play in seven championship games.

After losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the next year’s Super Bowl, New England returned to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LIII. Thanks to an airtight defensive plan, the Patriots put the brakes on the high-scoring Los Angeles Rams for a 13-3 victory, earning Belichick his historic sixth Super Bowl title as head coach.

The Patriots followed with an outstanding 8-0 start in 2019, before struggling down the stretch and being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Titans.

Post-Brady Era and Departure

After nearly two decades of working together, Belichick was seeking for a new quarterback when Brady announced in March 2020 that he had signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite signing Cam Newton for the 2020 season, the Patriots finished 7-9 with an average of 20 points per game and missed the playoffs.

The next year, New England picked quarterback Mac Jones from the University of Alabama as a long-term replacement for Brady. Jones excelled as a rookie, completing 22 touchdown passes and helping the Patriots to a 10-7 record. The squad did, however, lose to division rival Buffalo in the playoffs.

Jones struggled over the next two seasons, with the Patriots finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs in 2022 before suffering to an even worse 4-13 record the following year. The team’s poor results fueled conjecture that Belichick will not return as head coach in 2024. Those fears were eventually confirmed when the coach stated in a joint news conference with Kraft on January 11 that the two parties had “amicably” agreed to split up.

Children

Belichick and Debby Clarke were married for nearly 30 years before their 2006 divorce. The couple has three children, Amanda, Stephen, and Brian.

In 2007, Belichick began dating Linda Holliday, a television sports correspondent who eventually became president of the Bill Belichick Foundation. In September 2023, it was reported that the couple ended their romance after it “ran its course.”
